---< PGP intro v1.0 Begin.>--- PGP stands for Pretty Good Privacy and is a standard system to either digitally sign a e-mail message or fully encrypt a e-mail and it's attachments. It's easy to use and VERY secure. Anyway.. first you need to get the PGP software. You can get the PGP v5.5 plugin for Outlook or Eudora at http://www.nai.com/products/security/pgp_per.asp You can also get the freeware PGP program there (PC & Mac) and just cut and paste the output to your favorite e-mail application, etc. After installing PGP, you'll need to create your PGP private key. This is similar to your email password in terms of keeping it secret but you should NEVER give this away. Go ahead and run the PGP program and create a private key. You will be asked for a password that is strong (containing upper and lower case characters with numbers) that you can remember. DON'T USE your common e-mail, root, administrator passwords. You really should come up with one JUST for PGP. After that, it will ask you to register your key with a PGP key holder. If you aren't behind a firewall, this should work fine as long as you are already on-line to the Internet. If you don't want to do this, just skip it since it is NOT critical. Now, goto Edit-->Copy. This will put your Public key into the clipboard. Now go back to Outlook, create an e-mail to me and in the text area of the e-mail, hit edit->paste. After that.. I'll have your public key. Go ahead and also send that public key to all the other people that you want to do PGP with. Once I have your public PGP key, I'll send you mine. Once you get my public key, you need to add it to your "PGP key chain". To do this, run PGP or in Outlook click on the "Two Keys" icon. PGP should then automatically import my key into your key chain. Here is a little more info: If the PGP plugin is like Eudora's, you will have a few buttons added to the toolbar. Two keys: This is the PGP program itself. You will only need to run this for creating new private keys and importing new public keys PGP/MIME: This is to use PGP but I can't figure out what you need this button for. Envelope: Press this to ENCRYPT a e-mail with a message. You will use this magnet on a lot. it Paper w/: Press this to SIGN a e-mail. a quill This makes PGP read your message pen and do a MD5 hash or CRC check on the whole message including the headers and encrypts your public key with the hash and puts the results at the bottom of the message. So, with this footer message, other people with your public key can verify that this message did come from you and was not altered in any fashion. So, once you have sent me your public key and you have mine, open up a new e-mail to me and put something in the subject and text area. Now, click on the "Envelope w/ magnet" button and then send the message. PGP will pop up and it should highlight my PGP public key. If you send a PGP e-mail to multiple people then ALL of those user's public PGP keys need to be highlighted. Anyway.. once my public key is selected, click "OK", it will encrypt it and put it in the outgoing queue. Now.. just send it and I should get it. Lemmie know if you need more help. Ps. Check out a cool (somewhat techincal) PGP signing and encryption flow chart I came up with, at: http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~dranch/SECURITY/how-pgp-works.jpg Pps. Be warned, OutLook98 is NOT 100% compatible with standard SMTP servers. This "feature" will be fixed in a future patch. The problem revolves around the fact that Outlook98 doesn't use the RFC standard "FROM:" header field. Losers.. ---< PGP intro v1.0 end.>---
