Rocko - Econ/BSS's Unix machine

You are graphical user (for this main page) since 8/28/99

Rocko was a experiment of John Spade and myself back in 1991'-92'. We used old spare parts laying round to see what this new thing called Linux was really about. We originally just wanted to play around with Unix administration and learn networking on a higher level.

As time passed, people started to hear about Rocko and begun requesting accounts. So we started adding accounts and people started using Rocko as their primary Unix account for Email, WWW services, News, etc. Back then, the machine didn't really have a name so I named the machine "Rocko" after the cartoon series 'Rockos Modern Life' from Nickelodeon. Later with the help from Nathan Ramella, Brett Baptista, and Kathleen Donohue, Rocko became a full fledged Unix server offering all major Internet services to its users.

Today, Ken Kellam is the on-site administrator with both myself and Douglas Kraus helping Ken as remote co-administrators. It should also be noted that Rocko wouldn't have been able to weather various hardware failures, upgrades, etc without the financial support of John Spade and both the political and financial support of Fredrica Shockley.

With Rocko, BSS/Econ offers one of Chico States's only Internet specific classes for students to learn and use the Internet to its fullest potential. Rocko is also one of the ONLY UNIX machines not controlled by the College of ECT.

In other news, we also run another machine named "Spunky". Spunky is an experimental machine that we test new features, software, etc and such for Rocko. Ultimately, we hope to move Rocko's WWW services to Spunky and possibly implement a LISTSERV on this server some day. Until then, Spunky is officially Rocko's hardware backup if anything fails.

Check out Rocko's Web page with links to all of Rocko's users and their WWW pages!
